Can you paint the scratch board of a guitar?

I have an electric Yamaha Strat. The scratchboard is white but it was someone else's before and it has a yellow tinge. I want to paint it red. Can you paint the scratchboard? Do I have to seal it as well? What type of Paint should I use? Thanks!
