About electric and bass guitar...?

So, I'm learning accoustic guitar, but I'd like to be able to play electric and preferably bass. Are the chords for the acoustic the same as for electric? I'm aware of something about tabs... Anyway, I was mainly wondering what the best models of bass guitar are and (if you can play) how you learned?
